One visit to Bear Cave shows why
Petit Jean Mountain has always been
considered a magical and mysterious
place.

Named for a bear who once lived in a
small cave here, the Bear Cave area
offers visitors to Petit Jean State Park
a chance to explore some of
Arkansas' most amazing geological
formations.

The huge rocks here form shelters,
narrow passageways and small
caves. It is believed that the central
passageway was cut through the rock
thousands of years ago by the
running water of Cedar Creek, which
is since relocated. It is easy to see
how the feature gained the name of
"the Eye of the Needle."

The uniqueness of this setting is one
of the reasons the State of Arkansas
selected Petit Jean Mountain to
become its first state park. Arkansas
State Parks are now found in every
corner of the state and are rightly
recognized as some of the most
picturesque and best-maintained in
the nation.
The Bear Cave formations are easily
accessible from State Highway 154, the main
roadway leading through Petit Jean State
Park. The parking lot is located between
Mather Lodge and the intersection of
Highways 154 and 155.

The formations are just a few yards down the
trail from the parking lot and can be easily
visited by all members of the family. While
the trails around the base of the formations
are generally flat and easy to walk, please
exercise caution.
