Long before the first Spanish, English and French explorers landed on Southern shores, powerful Native American civilizations rose and fell across the Southeast.
Occupied from roughly A.D. 1000 to A.D. 1450, Moundville may well have been the largest city of its time in what is now the United States. The site is now an
archaeological park, operated by the University of Alabama Museums, the massive mound complex is located near Tuscaloosa in Moundville, Alabama.

The park provides a very nice website that includes details on the archaeology and history of the site, online tours and access to a short documentary on Moundville.
