Mississippi: History in the Magnolia State
Stretching from Tennessee on the north to the Gulf of
Mexico on the south, the state of Mississippi is beautiful,
diverse and a haven for lovers of Southern history, culture,
music and food.

It is a state of highways. There is the Mississippi River,
America's great highway of history and commerce. There is
the Natchez Trace, one of the nation's best known historic
roadways. And there is U.S. Highway 61, the route by which
the Delta Blues rolled up from the river to ignite a new form
of American music.

Mississippi is rich with historic sites and heritage tourism
destinations. There are the great Civil War battlefields of
Vicksburg, Corinth, Brices Cross Roads and Tupelo. Native
American mounds dot the landscape and Natchez bears
testimony to the rough and tumble days of the Mississippi
River's emergence as America's great avenue to the sea.
There are sites critical in the development of America's Civil
Rights Movement and there are landmarks of music and
culture including the birthplace of Elvis Presley.
